Reading the markings on an abrasive wheel is the first and most critical line of defence against a catastrophic failure. At the heart of this data is the ISO 525 marking system, which dictates the material, grit size, hardness, and bond type of the wheel.

Abrasive wheels are designed for specific materials; using a stone-cutting disk on steel, or vice-versa, can lead to overheating and structural breakdown of the bond. You must also check the dimensions: diameter, thickness, and bore: to ensure the wheel is a perfect match for the machine it is being mounted on. A wheel that is forced onto a spindle or one that sits too loosely is a disaster waiting to happen the moment the trigger is pulled.

Perhaps most overlooked is the expiry date, usually found stamped on the metal centre ring of the wheel. Most resin-bonded wheels have a shelf life of about three years because the bonding agents naturally degrade over time, especially if stored in damp or humid conditions. Using an out-of-date wheel is like using a car tyre with a visible bulge; it might look fine, but its internal integrity is compromised and it is no longer fit for purpose.

NEVER IGNORE THE CRITICAL LIMITS OF RPM RATINGS

The maximum operating speed of the wheel must always be greater than the maximum speed of the machine spindle. If you mount a wheel rated for 6,000 RPM onto a grinder that spins at 11,000 RPM, the centrifugal force will literally pull the wheel apart. This is a common cause of "explosive" failure where the wheel shatters into dozens of pieces the second it reaches full speed.
